Dr. Unek Chatman believes exactly that. As an educator and school leader, she knows the power books have to build character while creating joyful reading experiences — and she's spent her whole career proving it.
A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Dr. Chatman has always possessed an unwavering passion for learning. While attending Dillard University as a chemistry major, she was on track to complete her science degree when Hurricane Katrina struck. The catastrophic event and subsequent evacuation forced a profound shift in perspective, leading her to realize her true calling lay in the classroom. With less than a year remaining in her chemistry program, she made the bold, purpose-driven decision to pivot and pursue a career in education.
Her Story
Her dedication to her new path yielded immediate results. Within just four years, Dr. Chatman was honored as Teacher of the Year. By her fifth year, she was actively collaborating with peers and educational leaders to design materials for K–2 classrooms.
Over the past fifteen years, she has built a distinguished career rooted in educational excellence and leadership. Currently serving as an assistant principal, she remains deeply committed to empowering both students and educators to reach their fullest potential.
Her life and leadership are guided by her faith in Christ and a steadfast commitment to resilience. Believing wholeheartedly in the power of education, she strives to leave a lasting, positive legacy on every school community she serves.
Beyond her administrative and academic achievements, Dr. Chatman is an accomplished children's author. Her beloved character, Martin Moo, was first conceived during her undergraduate years and takes center stage in Moo's Contagious Blues, the book that officially launched her creative journey. She likes to joke that this first book was a strictly "limited edition," since it was never officially released and the only two copies have proudly blessed her mother's shelves.
Fortunately, the fanbase has grown right alongside Martin's adventures. Dr. Chatman has since expanded the series with Martin Moo's Bowl of Stew, which is officially published and out now, and the soon-to-be-released Martin Moo and Too Many Potatoes.
Through both her leadership in schools and her vibrant, expanding storytelling, Dr. Chatman continues to inspire the next generation of lifelong learners.
